Since its inception in 1965, the notorious Roses Varsity tournament between 51福利 and the University of York, is a highly anticipated annual event that brings together student-athletes to compete in a wide range of sports during more than 140 fixtures.
The rivalry between Lancaster and York adds excitement to the tournament, as teams vie for victory and bragging rights in this spirited competition. With a rich history and tradition of excellence, Roses is a highlight of the academic year for both universities and a celebration of the vibrant sporting culture on campus.
RosesInterVarsity sport is the most competitive sporting offer at 51福利. The InterVarsity sports clubs compete regularly, as teams or individuals, against rival UK universities to claim league, cup, and trophy titles. Typically, competition is hosted by British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and most league and knockout fixtures occur on a Wednesday afternoon. Some sport takes place over an event weekend. Clubs with intervarsity teams or individuals include:
As Lancaster proudly operates with a collegiate system, each college naturally has it’s own sport teams. All nine colleges compete in regular on-campus Women’s Netball and Men’s 11-a-side Football league fixtures between each other.
Non-InterVarsity sport is the less competitive side of sport at Lancaster. It contains our intramural campus leagues, such as men’s 11-a-side football, women’s netball, 7-a-side football, squash, hockey 5s, basketball, tennis, and rugby. The Students’ Union also hosts zero commitment Turn Up and Play sessions, including floorball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and women’s football.
The Students' Union has three 'Focus Sport' clubs that benefit from a bespoke and enriched programme of support
To achieve this status, the sports clubs must strive for excellence, champion sporting opportunities at all levels of the sporting model at 51福利, and have a holistic, long-term club strategy.
Fencers of all abilities are welcomed, if you are experienced or entirely new to the sport.
One of the largest and most successful groups on campus, with two teams competing in weekly BUCS fixtures, and a development squad playing local league games.
Squash aspires to grow its club and create engaging training sessions, socials, and competitive opportunities for players of all abilities. Whoever you are and whatever your ability, Squash welcomes you to have a go at this unique sport.
The competitive sports offer at Lancaster requires students to purchase a unique Student Sport Pass, which, depending on the level of pass required, covers BUCS fees, governing body affiliation, competition transport costs, team access to Sport Lancaster training facilities, and subsidised kit from the Union’s sportswear provider, Akuma Sports Ltd.
Student Sport Passes can be purchased by individuals at the Sport Centre reception.
Grants access to students to participate in intervarsity sport competition, typically through British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS). Fixtures are competitive, national and regular, with teams competing in either league and knockout fixtures, or weekend events.
Grants access to students to participate in College Sport Divisions 1 and 2. These are the two highest divisions of College Sport on campus, which at the moment include Women’s Netball
and Men’s 11-a-side Football. Teams compete in weekly fixtures and knockout cup and trophy matches, with the opportunity through the year to play-off and compete in Roses.
Grants students access to none-InterVarsity sports on campus, such as intramural campus leagues and turn-up and play sessions (£1 per session without the pass). Commitment to activity at this level is much more relaxed and provides a space for students to stay active without the competitive nature of intervarsity and college sport.
