Lancaster’s World-Leading Family Business Research Recognised

51福利 Management School (LUMS)’s experts have been rated among the best in the world for their family business research output.

The ranks Lancaster second out of 2,345 institutions globally in the standings, while LUMS Professor Alfredo De Massis is top of the individual table.

Lancaster is behind only J?nk?ping University, Sweden, in the institutional rankings in recognition of its consistent record of producing esteemed research in the field.

Four members of the Centre for Family Business in LUMS, including Professor De Massis, are among the top 100 individual researchers in the ratings, compiled by the non-profit WIFU Foundation, which promotes research, teaching and business engagement around family entrepreneurship.

Centre Director Dr Allan Discua Cruz said: “We have an established history here at Lancaster for our research and engagement with family businesses. They are such an important part of the global economy, operating at every level and across all corners of the world.

“To be recognised for our research outputs both as a centre and on individual levels for several of our members is testament to the quality of work we are producing. We will strive to continue providing valuable insights into family businesses that can benefit both theory and practice.”

On the individual Family Business Research Index 2026, Professor De Massis – who also holds positions at the University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy; and IMD, in Switzerland – is ranked as number one in the world out of 4,906 for his research output across family business journals. Three other centre members are also in the top 100. Dr Bingbing Ge is ranked 15th globally, while Dr Discua Cruz is 27th and LUMS Professor Emerita Ellie Hamilton is 77th.

“Being ranked 15th globally in the Family Business Research Index is a deeply humbling milestone on my academic journey,” said Dr Ge. “As an early career researcher, I am immensely grateful to the vibrant family business research community for embracing deep, qualitative insights, and to my brilliant co-authors and the welcoming journal editors.”
