Year 9: Discover the Challenge

In Year 9, the programme deepens from aspiration-building into enquiry and research.

Discover the Challenge (In School)

Students are introduced to the idea of university as a place of research and real-world problem-solving. Working in teams, they begin exploring a broad challenge theme such as:

• Climate and environment
• Health and wellbeing
• Technology and society
• Inequality and communities

Students develop a “Challenge Brief” outlining who is affected, why the issue matters, and what they want to explore.

Thinking Like a Researcher (On Campus)

During a research immersion day, students learn how researchers:

• Ask meaningful questions
• Use evidence
• Test ideas
• Work collaboratively
• Embrace uncertainty

Through hands-on workshops linked to real university research, students apply research tools to their own challenge and refine their ideas.

10:00 - 10:30am: Welcome and How researchers think session

10:40am - 12:10pm: Research in action workshops

12:15 - 1:00pm: Lunch

1:00 - 1:55pm: Team working time

2:00pm: Day ends

Celebration and Challenge Showcase (On Campus)

The programme culminates in a celebratory showcase event where students present their challenge solutions through research-style posters. Academics, researchers, and student ambassadors provide constructive feedback,validating students as contributors and reinforcing progression pathways into Years 10 and 11.

There is no formal judging — the focus is on creativity, curiosity, and thoughtful enquiry.

By the end of the programme, students:

• Feel confident participating in university spaces
• Understand that higher education is about enquiry, ideas, and impact
• Recognise their own strengths and transferable skills
• Can see themselves as future learners in higher education

Discover positions young people not as visitors to university — but as emerging scholars, thinkers, and problem-solvers.

Year 10 – Discover Futures

The final stage of the Discover Programme supports students at a crucial point in their education as they prepare for GCSE success and begin making decisions about their post-16 pathways. Through a combination of an in-school workshop and a campus experience, students develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to make informed choices about their future.

Planning for the Future (In School)

The Year 10 journey begins with an interactive workshop in school, where students reconnect with their previous Discover experiences and reflect on how their aspirations and understanding of future opportunities have developed since Year 8.

Students will:

• Reflect on their Discover journey and how their ideas about the future have evolved.

• Explore the full range of post-16 pathways, including A Levels, T Levels, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and university routes.

• Learn why keeping their options open through GCSE success is important.

• Take part in a career pathways mapping activity, investigating how different careers can be reached through multiple education routes.

• Reflect on their own interests, strengths and favourite subjects to begin considering potential next steps after Year 11.

• Develop practical decision-making skills, learning how to compare options, gather information and make informed choices.

• Prepare for their campus visit by identifying what they want to learn and creating questions for current university students.

By the end of the session, students have a clearer understanding of the opportunities available to them and are ready to explore these further during their visit to 51福利.

Building Skills for GCSE Success (On Campus)

During their campus visit, students focus on developing the study habits and learning strategies that will support them throughout their GCSEs and beyond.

Working alongside university staff and student ambassadors, students take part in a series of engaging workshops that explore how learning works and introduce evidence-informed approaches to revision and independent study.

Students will:

• Discover how memory works and why strategies such as retrieval practice and spaced revision improve learning.

• Learn practical revision techniques, including flashcards, practice questions and effective revision planning.

• Explore time management strategies to help balance schoolwork, revision and personal commitments.

• Develop subject-specific study techniques that can be applied across different GCSE subjects.

• Hear first-hand experiences from current university students about staying motivated, managing exam pressure and developing effective study habits.

• Create a personalised two-week revision and study plan with realistic goals and achievable actions.

Throughout the day, students also experience life on a university campus, meet current students and gain a greater understanding of how the skills they are developing now will support future success in education, training and employment.

At the end of the visit, each student receives a Discover Future Success Guide—a practical resource packed with study strategies, revision techniques, wellbeing advice and information about future education and career pathways, enabling them to continue developing their skills long after the programme has finished.
